Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is thread, hundreds of tiny threads which sew people together through the years.

About This Quote

Charla Muller is a poet and author who was born in the Philippines. Her parents were among the thousands of Filipinos who fled their homeland to escape from the Japanese occupation. They left their native land, never to return to it. In doing so, they left behind all their possessions, including all their family heirlooms.

They carried only a few sets of clothing and a few valuables with them. Charla’s mother died when she was ten years old. She never forgave herself for not being able to travel with her mother on that final journey home.

Her father, who had remarried after his wife’s death, had already left for the United States before she was born. Charla kept all the family heirlooms packed away in boxes in her basement for many years until she decided to write about her parents’ lives. She discovered that some of these heirlooms were more than just sentimental items; they held memories of her mother’s childhood and the history of her family’s roots in the Philippines.
